My name is Marshall Kirk. I am 15 years old and I live near Sumas (north of Bellingham). My homeschooling education has included involvement in community activities with my family. I got involved in politics in 2010 when we helped a state representative get elected. Our family has been helping with campaigns off and on ever since. It was a privilege to be a Page during the 2016 session in Olympia. It gave me a better understanding of the political system and how much work it is to be involved in it. I also enjoy raising animals and horticulture.

The page program exists both for the House of Representatives and the Senate. The basic details are that the youth age 14 to 16 are chosen to serve one week during the session. Training is provided and by the end of the week they understand the ins and outs of the Capitol and the legislative process.

Representative Elizabeth Scott
I
was a single mom and decided to quit one of my three jobs so I could homeschool
my very active 5-year-old son in the time that freed up. My son had been bored
to tears by the worksheets required by his kindergarten teacher, but by the end
of our first month of homeschooling he was reading "Green Eggs and
Ham." With homeschooling, I could spend more time with him, select
curriculum and methods best suited to his hands-on learning style, work on his
character, and help him direct his energy toward healthy pursuits.
He ended up doing four years of Speech and Debate; he went to Nationals in Speech, volunteered for two months in Uganda and six weeks in Belize, and graduated high school at 16 with some college credits already under his belt. At 20, he finished his Bachelor's Degree in International Business.
Meanwhile, I remarried and as the years rolled by we began homeschooling our daughter, who is now 12. Some years, she participates in homeschool co-ops and takes many classes, but last year, she accompanied me to Olympia a couple days every week during the Legislative Session and learned civics from the inside, sitting in committee hearings, watching Floor debate on bills, and meeting people from all walks of life.
What I love about homeschooling is that it is so flexible to the child's needs and interests, it allows plenty of time for the child to discover and hone her gifts and talents so she can better serve God and her neighbors, and it keeps families connected.
